A small edition of copper etchings, made right in my garage with a car battery, jumper cables and salt water. Focus was paid to choice of product and material in the creation of the etchings. Traditionally, acid is used to etch copper. Petroleum based resists called “ground” are used to create the design and resist the effects of the acid. I chose to use a process called electro-etching (which uses electricity and salt water) with nail polish instead of typical ground. Video below for process.

I know, while these processes aren’t free from any attachment to “guilt” from an environmentalist standpoint, this brings about an interesting investigation into our personal responsibility and the choices we are faced with living in the cultural and economic systems that we do. The status quo is that nothing is entirely eco-friendly - we usually find ourselves making decisions between two “evils”. The structures are in need of examination and rebuilding.

I was working on this edition as part of the collection of work “Modern Guilt” before COVID 19 occurred and now after, this work seems all the more relevant and appropriate in terms of us looking at our societal structures.
